A strong 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea on Tuesday but caused no tsunami or damage, Australian Associated Press (AAP) reports Tuesday.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck at 8:28 am (0928 AEDT), 125 km west coast of Arawa, Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea at a depth of 33 km.

"There was moderate shaking, no damage and no tsunami," Lawrence Anton, a seismologist at the Geological Survey of Papua New Guinea, told AFP as reported by AAP.

Papua New Guinea sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where continental plates meet. The region is frequently struck by earthquakes.

There was no immediate alert issued by the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
