Taliban suicide bombers raided a police center in Gerdez city, capital of Paktia province, in east Afghanistan Monday morning, in which four people were killed and five others injured, spokesman for provincial administration Rohullah Samoon said.

"Five suicide bombers took position in a local market next to a police center in Gerdez city and begun shooting and setting off explosions, wounding two policemen and three civilians, including a woman," Samoon told Xinhua.

Two of the suicide bombers blew themselves up, two others were shot dead by police and the remaining one is still resisting, he further said.

The area has been surrounded by police to arrest or kill the remaining insurgent, he added.

Meantime, a Taliban purported spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid in talks with media via cellular phone from undisclosed location claimed responsibility and said several policemen have been killed.

As part of new tactics, Taliban militants have resorted to suicide attacks and roadside bombings, which often claim civilians' life.

The militants by carrying out a huge blast in the capital city Kabul six days ago left eight civilians dead and more than 40 others injured.
