UNIDO General Conference opens in Vienna

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) opened its 13th session in Vienna Monday.
Heads of state and government, including Iceland's President Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Lesotho Prime Minister Pakalitha Mosisili and Tanzanian Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda would attend this five-day event.
Some other high-level officials from around the world as well as senior representatives of international organizations also participated in the biennial general conference.
The topic of this year's meeting focuses on "green industries" and the opportunities they offer for developing countries in the current economic circumstance, which means, the role of industry in finding solutions for these countries in achieving their development objectives within a framework of environmental sustainability would be highlighted.
As UNIDO's highest policymaking organ, the General Conference consists of all 173 member states. It will re-appoint the Director-General for a period of four years, approve the program and budgets and establish the scale assessments for regular budget expenditures for the forthcoming biennium.
