SCO transport ministers agree to expand cooperation

Transport ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) have reached consensus to expand cooperation in road, railway and air transport to meet the demand of growing business ties, said a senior Chinese transport official Tuesday.
Feng Zhenglin, China's vice minister of transport, said at a press conference that the fourth conference of SCO transport ministers, held in Beijing Tuesday, have reached consensus on enhancing cooperation in road, railway and air links to boost the regional trade and economic exchanges.
"Transport cooperation between SCO member states have achieved great success in recent years, such as the China-Kyrghizstan-Uzbekistan road project and Tajikistan-Uzbekistan road project," said Li Shenglin, transport minister of China.
The ministers agreed to hold transport seminars and training courses to enhance management and strengthen exchanges.
They also agreed to work out actions plans to remove major obstacles in international road transport.
The ministers said they would also beef up cooperation with the observer member states including India, Mongolia, Iran and Pakistan given their important geographical positions.
They would also like to solicit their opinions especially in the planning and construction of transport infrastructures.
The mechanism of the SCO transport ministers' meeting was initiated by China and Kyrghizstan in 2002.
