China's Supreme People's Court and Supreme People's Procuratorate have delivered their work reports to deputies of the 12th National People's Congress at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

Chief Justice Zhou Qiang said the country's highest court received over 11, 000 cases last year, up by 3.2 percent compared with 2012. He noted that intellectual property rights were a growing area of focus, with China's court system as a whole handling 100, 000 such cases that cracked down on the production of fake and shoddy goods.

The Supreme Court has also pushed for legal reforms and established a special court to provide legal services for the development of the Shanghai Free Trade Zone. Ever since the new leadership took office a year ago, corrupt officials have been targeted on an unprecedented scale. Eight at the ministerial level were sacked, as were nearly 3,000 other officials above the county level.

According to Procurator General Cao Jianming, his office investigated some 40-thousand cases of corruption last year, about a 10 percent increase over the previous year. Their work led to charges being laid against over 50-thousand government officials for graft and infringement of people's rights. Cao has also promised to intensify investigations of senior officials in 2014. The two reports will be reviewed and voted on at the closing ceremony of the NPC session on Thursday.?
