German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called for an ambitious roadmap to guide the European Union towards closer fiscal and economic integration.

Merkel wants EU leaders to agree on a concrete plan over their common currency when they meet next month. She says the plan must then be put into place over the next two to three years.

Despite her push for a deeper union over the single currency, Merkel made clear she did not want a two-speed Europe that divides members of the currency bloc from other EU members.

After her appearance in Brussels, the German Chancellor arrived in London to meet with British Prime Minister David Cameron. The visit comes amid a stand-off over the EU’s medium-term budget. Cameron has said he is ready to veto the EU’s seven-year budget, while Merkel has warned the UK to not turn its back on Europe.
