Japan and the US have reaffirmed that Diaoyu Islands belong within the Japan-US security range. The remark was made at a meeting between a visiting top Japanese Foreign Ministry official and the US Assistant Secretary of State, Kurt Campbell, in Washington.

Meanwhile, the Tokyo metropolitan government has handed an application to the Japanese government to land on the Diaoyu islands next Wednesday. An official says it is unlikely the application will be approved.
