The Philippines has announced a fishing ban in the South China Sea area that encompasses Huangyan Island. It comes just one day after China announced its own fishing ban.

China said it will stop fishing from May 16 to August 1 in the Huangyan Island area. The Philippines' says its ban will cover the same time period. Philippine Foreign Minister Albert del Rosario said the ban was an opportunity to replenish the rich fishing grounds.

Meanwhile, Philippine President Benigno Aquino said the decision by both countries might help to temporarily defuse tensions. He also said it is not the time to pass the issue to the International Tribunal, as constructive dialogues are still ongoing.

However, China continues to urge the Philippines to stop complicating tensions between the two countries.
