The cold spell that's been plaguing much of northern China sees no signs of easing. Meanwhile, the country's southern regions, which had been mostly spared the icy weather experienced by their northern neighbours, are expecting a substantial drop in temperature in the coming days.

Sections of the Yellow River in the Northwestern Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region have frozen over as temperatures continue to plunge. Thickening ice now covers 170 kilometers of the Yellow river and is expanding at 2 kilometers per day.

At Yingkou port in Liaoning province in the country's northeast, sea ice about 20 centimeters thick is posing difficulty for the transport of grain to the south. Still not seeing relief from the cold spell are China's northernmost Mohe county and parts of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, where temperatures are lingering below minus 40 degrees Celsius.
