David Hockney's super-sized art exhibition has opened at the Royal Academy in London and is set to continue through to April. But getting hold of tickets might be difficult, as staff at the Academy say they're selling fast. Here's a peak inside the display at the works of one of Britain's best-loved artist.

British artist David Hockney poses with his painting "The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire in 2011" at the Royal Academy of Arts in London January 16, 2012.

The 74-year-old David Hockney is celebrating his first major exhibition of landscape paintings in the UK.

The new collection, entitled "A Bigger Picture", features a series of vivid landscapes inspired by the part of East Yorkshire where he grew up. It brings together more than 150 of his works, some created back in the 1950s, and others produced just a few months ago.

David Hockney said, "It's a landscape I know from my childhood so it has meaning. I never thought of it as a subject until ten years ago and then realised for me at my age it was a terrific subject."

British artist David Hockney takes a picture of press photographers with his mobile phone as he poses in front of his painting entitled "The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire in 2011" at the opening of his exhibition.

The exhibition reveals the artist's emotional engagement with the landscape and brings into focus his great gift for intense observation. It includes vibrant oil paintings like "Pearblossom Highway", "A Road Through The Wolds", and "Woldgate Woods", along with giant works like "Winter Timber", a scene he's recreated several times.

Edith Devaney, curator of Royal Academy of Arts, said, "I think he is one of these people who's incredibly open to all forms of art and out of all the artists I know he's the most regular gallery visitor, which is interesting, he keeps up with everything. He's acutely interested in what's going on".

The exhibition also features films and artworks he made using an Apple iPad.

"David Hockney: A Bigger Picture" runs until April 9th, at the Royal Academy. The London run will be followed by a tour of Spain, from May to September and Germany, from October until February 2013.
