The Supreme People's Court of China recently revealed the latest interpretation of the Marriage Law, which provides a judicial guideline for the courts.

One part of the new interpretation that's receiving a lot of attention is that which deals with property ownership. The law states that a house purchased before marriage is personal property. So, if the parents of one of the married couple buy a house for their child, the house will belong to that party if the couple separates.

This has triggered heated debate because it challenges the idea of couples being equal partners. Opponents say the new law favors men, who according to Chinese tradition, almost always pay for the house. CRI hit the streets of Beijing in search of the Chinese perspective.
