The top legislature, the National People's Congress Standing Committee has passed amendments to the Criminal Law. The alteration aims to reduce the number of executions by exempting anyone over the age of 75.

Under the new law, drunk driving will be considered "dangerous driving", under all circumstances. Food security has also been addressed. From now on anyone who adds poisonous or harmful ingredients during the production or selling of food will be subjected to hefty fines and a prison sentence.

Experts say the amendment will make violating the law an expensive business. The top legislature also adopted its first ever law on intangible cultural heritage, in a bid to better preserve the country's historic and artistic culture.
