In Jiangsu Province, a rumor about an explosion led people to flee which led to a fatal stampede on Thursday. The local government has released the latest on the investigation, and has detained four suspects.

The rumor said that a chemical factory nearby would explode in Xiangshui County. More than 10,000 residents of four townships there swarmed into the streets, after the rumors spread. The evacuation caused traffic jams and chaos on the streets and claimed four lives according to the local government.

Officials said that a new round of safety inspections at the chemical industry park is underway and that the government will work to make residents feel safe.
