Danish pavilion: A mermaid needs a bicycle

The Danish Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo 2010 is finally open and visitors can experience the best of Danish city life. People had crowded outside the pavilion long before the doors were opened to the public on Saturday morning.
At 9.30 a.m., the pavilion guides finally started letting excited visitors inside the double spiral-shaped pavilion, which features a harbor, an outdoor picnic area, biking lanes and a playground.
Some visitors were shown how to ride one of the 250 Danish city bikes, while others chose to walk around the pavilion slowly, taking in an exhibition created by some of Denmark’s finest young artists.
Among the first to enter were Cao Longhai, 83, and his wife Xi Guizhen, 81. The retired couple from Suzhou had read about the Danish Pavilion in their local newspaper and decided a visit was an absolute must.
Cao Longhai said the Little Mermaid was the main attraction of the pavilion. When the couple left after a 20-minute tour, Cao Longhai was very pleased:
"I took pictures of us in front of the Little Mermaid and it almost felt like we were right there in Denmark," he said, before rushing off to visit some of the other Expo pavilions.
