Austrian director Michael Haneke's grim yet glorious study of guilt, distrust and malice, "The White Ribbon," walked away with top honors at the 2009 European Film Awards in Bochum, Germany.

 

Haneke also picked up the awards for Best Director and Best Screenwriter at the event.

Best European actress went to Oscar winner Kate Winslet for her part in Stephen Daldry's "The Reader." The actress, however, was not present to pick up her award.

French star Tahar Rahim won the European actor award for his starring role in French director Jacques Audiard's prison drama "A Prophet." The work is about an illiterate inmate who educates himself and becomes involved in drug and smuggling circles.

The People's Choice Award went to Danny Boyle for his multiple award winning film "Slumdog Millionaire."

The European Discovery Award, for best debut feature film, went to Peter Strickland for his Transylvanian-set thriller "Katalin Varga."

Meanwhile, French Actress Isabelle Huppert and English director Ken Loach received lifetime achievement awards.
