US President Barack Obama is now in South Korea to begin his two-day visit to the country. He is expected to meet with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak. The DPRK nuclear issue and the US-South Korea Free Trade Agreement will be at the top of their agenda.

 

This is Obama's first visit to South Korea.

Obama will meet with his counterpart Lee Myung-bak to discuss the nuclear stand-off with the DPRK and efforts to persuade it to return to negotiations.

They will discuss a proposal the South Korean president first discussed with Obama in June, the so-called "grand bargain," to denuclearize the DPRK in a single step in exchange for massive rewards.

South Korea FM Yu Myung-Hwan said, "I think this summit will become a chance to reaffirm that the two sides are cooperating on the DPRK nuclear issue on the basis of the US-South Korea alliance."

The two presidents will also focus on the Free Trade Agreement signed by the two countries in 2007 that has yet to be ratified by their respective legislatures.

Following their meeting, the leaders will hold a joint press conference.

Obama will head home later Thursday after visiting a US military base in the country, which hosts 28 thousand 5 hundred US troops.
