For 1,300 years it had served as the basis for selecting civil officials. But what about the military? you may ask. Was there a similar system for selecting army officers?
As it happens, at the time of the Tang Dynasty, which followed Sui, the empress, Wu Zetian, established an imperial system for this very purpose.
