Li Duan successfully defended his Paralympic title, and realized his dream of breaking the world record at the Beijing Paralympic Games.

In 1996, an exploding fire extinguisher deprived Li of his eyesight. His basketball dream collapsed.
Li Duan said, "After the accident, I can't see. I have been playing basketball since I was a little boy, but now I can't. It's like the door is blocked, just like the darkness in front of me. The disappointment and frustration, you just can't get rid of it. You just want to go run and jump."
However, as one door closed, another opened. With the help and encouragement of his family and coach, he made it through his psychological nightmare and realized he could succeed in track and field.
But it was not easy at first.
Li Duan said, "When I start training, I had several question marks in my mind. The coach claps in front of me, guiding me running. But I dare not run at all. It's like there is always a force dragging me back. The coach says I should just run. But I just dare not. He says he will let me know when to stop, but I doubt that even if he asked me to stop, can I just stand still. My coach told me I will cooperate well with you, and help you to realize the Paralympic dream."
Now, the three-time Paralympic champion says he finds enjoyment and the same feeling of personal achievement in this new sport.
Li Duan said, "Running faster and faster, I just imagine running out of the darkness. And dream that all of a sudden, I can see."
