Hurricane Ike killed at least 48 people in Haiti and ripped off rooftops in the southern Bahamas on Sunday.
The hurricane destroyed homes, swept away boats and brought more rain to waterlogged communities in Haiti. Authorities say among the dead were 13 children, who were killed by floods triggered by Ike in Cabaret, a town north of the capital, Port-au-Prince.
Flooding from Tropical Storm Hanna last week was believed to have killed at least 500 Haitians around the port city of Gonaives. After dumping more heavy rain on Haiti, the hurricane bore down on Cuba's coast and raged through the Turks and Caicos islands, and Great Inagua, the Bahamas' southernmost island.
Residents of the Florida Keys, an island chain connected by bridges with only one road out, were told to evacuate as a precaution. Despite weakening, Ike is still a dangerous Category 3 hurricane with 195 kilometer- per-hour winds.
