In other Olympic action, Samuel Wanjiru became the first Kenyan to win an Olympic marathon race. He completed the over 42 kilometer course in an Olympic record time of two hours, six minutes and 32 seconds.

The U.S. men's basketball team lived up to expectations by finally out-shooting underdog Spain -- 118 to 107. That's the 13th Olympic gold medal in men's basketball for the Americans. But the Spanish squad put up a determined and inspired fight throughout the match.

The Americans also emerged triumphant in men's volleyball. They beat defending champion Brazil 3 - 1 to win the gold.

Meanwhile, Russia successfully retained its title in the group all-round team event in rhythmic gymnastics. The Chinese girls also delivered an outstanding performance, earning the silver medal. This is China's first-ever Olympic medal in this category.

And Hungary won its third straight Olympic title in men's water polo... defeating the U.S. 14 - 10 in the final.

The final gold medal of the Beijing Olympics went to France -- beating Iceland 28 - 23 in the Men's Handball Final.
