New Zealand

Theme: Cities of Nature: Living between Land and Sky

The indigenous Maori culture greatly influenced the design of the New Zealand Pavilion. The pavilion brings the Maori creation myth to life through a three-act play; visitors first arrive at a welcoming plaza and enter the wedge-shaped pavilion before finally emerging near its rooftop garden. The white canopy in the plaza represents the Sky Father and the plaza represents the Earth Mother; the white pillars supporting the canopy represent forests, stressing the important connection between cities and nature. The pavilion also takes visitors through a day in the life of a typical New Zealand family through several multimedia displays.

Singapore

Theme: Urban Symphony

The Singapore Pavilion, resembling a huge music box, displays Singapore's urbanization and sustainability practices by showing a miniature version of the city-state. Cold water running along the perimeter of the pavilion cools the building and reduces energy consumption. Recyclable building materials were extensively used in the building's construction. As the orchid is its national flower, Singapore bred a new, unique species of orchid for the Shanghai Expo to symbolize the vitality of both Shanghai and Singapore.

Thailand

Theme: Thainess: Sustainable Ways of Life

The Thailand Pavilion integrates a variety of artistic and architectural elements native to Thailand into its design. The pavilion is laid out in traditional Thai style, with its main feature being a tiered roof similar to those found in Thailand. The pavilion also features Indrajit and Lan Tan, two mythical giants from Thailand and China. The two colorful, intimidating gatekeepers, standing alongside each other at the main entrance of the pavilion, welcome visitors to learn about the pavilion. The exhibits in the pavilion highlight the Thai way of life as well as the interaction between the country's urban and rural communities.
