“Days and Nights in Shanghai,” a new DVD that offers foreigners a new look at the dynamic city of Shanghai, was released prior to the National Day Holiday.

The DVD was presented by China International Publishing Group (CIPG), with assistance from the Information Office of the Shanghai Municipal Government.

The four independent 60-minute versions in Chinese, English, French and Japanese were produced by BEIJING REVIEW and published by New World Press, both of which are owned by CIPG.

According to the producer, the DVD presents Shanghai’s characteristics, history and culture, scenic spots and tourist attractions, as well as glamour through an eye-catching and in-depth combination of narrations and visuals.

Most of the DVD is composed of original footage filmed in high definition, with file footage interspersed to accurately show the historical development of the city, and helps to show Shanghai’s openness and optimism as the host to the 2010 World Expo.

Initiated and based on a unique view from the foreigner’s eye, the anchors for each language version came from their respective countries – the United States, France and Japan – and are all staff reporters with BEIJING REVIEW.

Using a storytelling method to present Shanghai to viewers, the DVD strings tourist attractions such as the Waibaidu Bridge, Shanghai Museum, Tianzifang, the Riverside Avenue, the Hengshan Road, and the World Expo site into a daylong journey the anchors take from morning till midnight. The historical background paints a rich and reliable portrait of the city, and the to-the-point narrations help package over a century of history and tradition into a 60-minute visual journey through Shanghai.

All four language versions will be available October 1 through the Expo Village, Shanghai Foreign Books Store, various audio and video stores, and CIPG’s overseas branches.

CIPG is China’s leading publisher for international readers, exporting over 3,000 kinds of books in nearly 20 languages every year. It has made efforts to present every aspect of China in terms of economy, society and culture to readers all around the world.

BEIJING REVIEW, under CIPG, is one of the national key foreign-oriented publications, which owns the national English news weekly Beijing Review and multilingual websites in Chinese, English, Japanese, French and German.

To better engage in the media convergence trend, CIPG has explored the shift from print media to new media in recent years, bringing fresh ideas to foreign-oriented communication, and strengthening its capabilities in producing and publishing multilingual publications.
