"A World in a Well" by Song Dong

The ongoing exhibition at chi K11 art museum includes four shows: Chinese artist Zhang Ding's "Enter the Dragon II," a site-specific, mirrored and mutating sound sculpture; "A World in a Well," an installation created by Chinese artist Song Dong; "Irreversible Intrusion" that displays "Ten Thousand Waves" by British artist Isaac Julien and "My Epidemic" by French artist Lili Reynaud-Dewar, plus Chinese artist Chen Tianzhuo's operatic performance, fusing references with debauched imagery through a range of grotesque characters.

The highlight of the exhibition is the installation created by Song Dong in 2015.

The main structure of the installation consists of discarded doors and windows. The external part of the work inlaid with gold mirror that depicts a luxurious yet false world, and the illusory sense extended to the extreme from the inside out.

The reflection of mirrors and lights forms this gorgeous and limitless visual illusion that defies reality. When entering the building, visitors are immediately taken by the glorious atmosphere, ignoring that all materials come from waste.

The artist believes in the "flourishing void," which involves both the mind and the real world.

Co-presented by the K11 Art Foundation and ICA (London), the second iteration of Zhang Ding's ongoing project titled "Enter the Dragon II" covers large areas of the museum with mirrored surfaces and directional speakers, creating an immersive environment.

The space was transformed into an immersive installation that was a hybrid of a sci-fi discotheque and a futuristic super club.

Occupying opposite sides of the space were two stages, partially obscured by spinning mirrors. Each night, a new pairing of musicians from Europe, the US and Asia from a variety of musical genres and backgrounds will improvise live on stage.

The project will further develop his interest in the "stimulating and chemical interaction between sound, stage and the immediate emotional response of the audience," some critics said.

Following a special performance on the opening night, there will be five public performances held on the following Saturday evenings: May 28, June 4, June 11, June 18 and June 25.

Date: Through June 30, Monday-Sunday, 10am-8pm (Last admission at 7pm)

Address: chi K11 art museum, 300 Huaihai Rd M.
