The world's largest abandoned man-made mine in Fuxin City of China's northeast Liaoning Province has been converted to a park. The Haizhou Opencast Coal Mine, was Asia's largest open coal mine in the 1950s. It was closed in July 2005 as the coal reserve was depleted. Two years and 400 million yuan later, the government turned the eight-square-km site into a park. The park, with an altitude of minus 175 meters, is 20 meters lower than the lowest land point of China, Aydingkol lake in the Turfan Basin in China's west Xinjiang Province. [China.org.cn]
