The Wen temple was established in the first year (1034) of the Jingyou reign of the Northern Song Dynasty. It features various kinds of steles, including four great steles from the Song Dynasty.

These four steles (蘇州文廟內宋代石刻) include the stele of the Pingjiang City map, the stele of lineage of emperors in China, and steles of astronomy maps and geographical maps. The stele of the Pingjiang City map is the oldest and the largest among four steles. It was erected in 1229 and stands 2.76 meters high and 1.45 meters wide and shows all of the city’s walls, rivers, temples, bridges and scenic spots. These steles demonstrate the advanced science of the Chinese people as well as abundance of culture during that time.
