Lying on the Zhaxi Ceri Hill towering 3,600 m above sea level in Nedong County, southeastern Tibet's Shannan Prefecture, the Yumbulagang Palace is Tibet's oldest palace with a history of 2,000 years. Yumbu means female deer in the Tibetan language; it was so named because the hill resembles such an animal. It is believed to be the residence for the first king of ancient Tibet's Tubo Kingdom. The fifth Dalai Lama had the palace expanded into a Tibetan Buddhist monastery later.
