Rule 3: Be strong, patient and imaginative

Although your newly-claimed territory is more comfortable than near the door, you can still get packed in like a sardine.

You are annoyed at the men behind you who constantly bump your back.

You feel uncomfortable standing face to face with unfamiliar people. You will have to exercise great restraint and physical power to withstand the heat and lack of fresh air.

Try to be fun, said the rules, and divert your attention from the current plight instead of grumbling about the people around you.

Think of what you will do during the rest of the day or use your imagination to make up stories based on observation in the train.

Perhaps the girl next to you who is reading her phone with an angry look might be quarrelling with her boyfriend.

With such possibilities, you'll be surprised how quickly the time passes.

But if you get stuck in the crowd, the rules endorse you to undertake a certain level of pushing and squeezing to establish a comfort zone for yourself.

Rule 4: Move before the train stops

No matter how sleepy you are in the early morning, do not take a nap on the train or you will miss your best chances for getting off.

Start to move towards the door one or two stops before your arrival in order to leave yourself with ample time for pushing through the crowd. Shout loudly if necessary, said the rules.

Rule 5: Be quick to get off the train

Try to be as quick as possible when getting off the train, which will save you time so you can get ahead of the crowd before it inches along the stairway leading to another subway line at transfer stations.

Rule 6: Old people and pregnant women are advised not to take subway trains during rush hour.

If you have mastered all the above-mentioned rules, congratulations! You can truly be termed a survivor of the urban jungle.
