With 102 skyscrapers soaring higher and higher in the city's downtown area, Shanghai became this year's number one Chinese city in terms of its number of skyscrapers, read a report published on MotianCity.com that focused on super-high buildings.

Shanghai is followed closely by Hong Kong and Guangzhou, whose skylines currently feature 68 and 63 skyscrapers, respectively.

According to the report, as of 2017, China will have 802 such massive towers gracing its mainland, 263 more than the U.S. Over the next decade, that number is set to reach 1,318, more than double that of the States.

MotianCity is a research organization based in China that focuses on skyscrapers. In June 2011, it released its first "Supercity" report, which uses the number of a city's skyscrapers to measure its competitiveness. The skyscrapers here refer to high-rises taller than 152 meters, or 500 feet.

Here follow the top 10 Chinese cities with most skyscrapers in 2012:

   Chengdu (成都)

 Completed skyscrapers: 9

Under construction: 17

Under planning: 21

Tallest in 2012: Huarun Tower (211.8m)
