Stone Forest (石林)

 

The Stone Forest is one of the most dramatic attractions in Yunnan. It is a set of karst formations located on the outskirts of Kunming, and was once a vast expanse of sea. Limestone rose from the sea from movements in the lithosphere. They are more than 270 million years old. The scenic area is divided into several areas: Major Stone Forest, Minor Stone Forest, Naigu Stone Forest and Zhiyun Cave. Legend has it that the forest was the birthplace of a beautiful girl, Ashima, and her faithful but forbidden love.
