HEU currently is an important base for talent cultivation and scientific research in the fields of ship industry, ocean exploration and nuclear application. It consists of 15 colleges, three departments and 40 research centers.HEU was once a part of the PLA Military Engineering Institute, which broke into HEU and the National University of Defense Technology in 1970. The latter is more well-known, but HEU is home to the naval engineering department.
