400,000 cars to stop running for low-carbon Shenzhen Universiade

About 400,000 cars will not be on road in Shenzhen during the 26th Summer Universiade, said organizers at a conference held?in Shenzhen?on Thursday.
To hold a green and low-carbon Universiade, the city called on people to reduce car driving during the games, said Huang Guoqiang, a spokesman of the Universiade Organizing Committee.
Many enterprises and citizens responded actively to the call and the owners of about 400,000 cars, among which 92 percent were private ones, promised not to drive during the Universiade, said Huang.
"It shows the understanding and support of our citizens," said Huang.
A total of 2011 new energy automobiles have been put into use since the end of July, and most athletes, coaches, reporters and officials will take the new energy buses during the games.
Shenzhen built and reconstructed dozens of roads these years. Thirteen special lanes were designated for the Universiade to guarantee a smooth traffic. The 77km-long special lanes were put into use on Aug. 4.
Meanwhile, the subway lines have covered 80 percent of the Universiade venues.
The Shenzhen Universiade, which will officially open on Friday evening, has attracted over 7,000 college student athletes from 152 countries and regions.
