China take clean sweep at table tennis worlds
Adjust font size:

All-conquering China completed a clean sweep at the world team table tennis championships in Guangzhou, South China Sunday as its men's team crushed South Korea 3-0 in the final for a fourth straight title.

It was also the 16th world title for the Chinese men who had not been beaten in team championships since losing to Jan Ove Waldner-led Sweden in 2000 in Kuala Lumpur.

The victory came a day after the women fought off a supercharged Singapore 3-1 to grab their 17th world title, or the eighth consecutive after a defeat to a unified Korean team in 1991.

China's men and women, packed with top paddlers in the world rankings, were determined to blitz the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou as they gear up for this year's Olympic Games on home turf.

They brushed aside all challengers before them, with the men losing only one individual match throughout the whole competition and the women two, both in the group play.

China's Hong Kong and Japan were the third-place finishers in both the men's and women's events.

European powerhouse Germany lost to South Korea 3-1 in the men's quarterfinals, in the absence of European champion Timo Boll, the highest-ranked non-Chinese paddler, who withdrew from the championships for an injured knee.
