All seeds but Ivo Karlovic from Croatia advanced in the China Open ATP tennis tournament on Wednesday.

Karlovic, the seventh seed, walked out of the match against Nanai Udomchoke of Thailand due to injury while trailing 3-1 in the second set. He lost first at 6-2.

Workaholic Nikolay Davydenko from Russia past through to the second round as he attended his 33rd event of the year here in Beijing.

His win completed the final match up for the last 16 in men's singles, where he will face Slovenia's Luka Cregorc.

The second round contest launched the same day saw fifth seed Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia become the first quarterfinalist after beating 33-year-old Kenneth Carlsen of Denmark 6-1, 2-6, 6-0.

He was joined then by third seed Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus, who beat Wang Yeu-Tzuoo of Chinese Taipei 7-6 (4), 6-4, and fourth seed Mario Ancic, who overcame Stefano Galvani of Italy 6-3, 7-5.

World number five Nikolay Davydenko of Russia never seemed to be firing on all cylinders but still proved to be in a different league than Kenneth Carlsen of Denmark as the US Open semifinalist powered into next round without much of a fight in his China Open debut.

The last-minute seeded player at the Open, won the opening set 6-3 by breaking one service game, and made a match of it after breaking 121st-ranked Carlson twice again in the second set, his second service game also broken.

"I did well in the U.S. Open, and that is the reason that I have the opportunity to go to Shanghai for the Masters' Cup. I am now the top ten players, but I still got two tournaments this year, including Shanghai. If I can keep doing well, I think I can reach the top," said Davydenko.

The 28th-ranked Hrbaty started strongly with a 6-1 first set win but suddenly lost his shape in the second set being unable to hold two of his own service games before handing an unexpected 6-2 defeat. Then Hrbaty found his form back to win a love set to seal the final victory.

Cypriot Baghdatis, playing his second straight game within 24 hours after ousting Denis Gremelmayr from Germany in a tight first round match, beat Wang Yeu-Tzuoo of Chinese Taipei 7-6 (4) and 6-4,but 130th Wang did give the Cypriot some scare in the opening set forcing a tie breaker.
