Uruguayan playmaker Giorgian de Arrascaeta scored in each half as Flamengo rose to the top of Brazil's Serie A standings on Sunday with a 2-0 victory at Gremio.

De Arrascaeta put the Rio de Janeiro side ahead when he rounded goalkeeper Tiago Volpi before slotting home a left-footed shot from a tight angle.

He doubled the advantage by dribbling 30 yards before angling a right-footed effort into the far corner.

The result at Arena do Gremio in Porto Alegre leaves Flamengo with seven points from three games, ahead of second-placed Palmeiras on goals scored. Gremio is 13th, four points further back.

"I'm just glad to be able to help the team," De Arrascaeta told reporters after the match. "It's always difficult to win away from home but we have to treat every game like a final. Today everything clicked and we'll go home happy."

In other fixtures on Sunday, Fluminense won 1-0 at home to Santos, Sao Paulo was held to a 1-1 home draw by Cruzeiro, Fortaleza drew 0-0 at home to Internacional, Mirassol drew 1-1 at Bahia, and Vitoria drew 2-2 at Atletico Mineiro.
