Chinese driver Zhou Guanyu has reaffirmed his determination to return to a full-time race seat in Formula 1, while embracing his new role as reserve driver for Ferrari for the 2025 season.

"I remain eager to return to the grid, whether an opportunity arises this year or the next. If there's a seat to fight for, I'll give it my all," Zhou told Xinhua during the Chinese Grand Prix at the Shanghai International Circuit.

The 25-year-old Shanghai native, who became China's first ever F1 race driver with Alfa Romeo in 2022, emphasized his unwavering commitment despite this season's setback.

"F1 is brutally competitive. Missing out on a seat this season is disappointing. If you can't deliver a strong performance and a strong mindset within a short time, it could cost the seat," Zhou said.

"I need to stay race-ready, both physically and mentally. My training intensity remains identical to when I was a full-time driver - no compromises," said Zhou, who has been testing previous Ferrari models since joining the team in February. "Driving single-seaters is crucial for maintaining neck strength and race-specific fitness."

Asked about potential moves to other racing series, Zhou reaffirmed that his focus is solely on returning to an F1 race seat. "My three seasons have proved my capabilities to teams and engineers. This year is about accumulating mileage and experience. I choose to stay close to the paddock. When opportunity knocks, I'll be prepared to seize it."

This year's Chinese Grand Prix also marks a milestone for Chinese motorsport as female driver Shi Wei became the country's first F1 Academy competitor, racing with Zhou's iconic number 24.

"I hope she enjoys the race weekend without pressure," Zhou said. "It's meaningful that my journey inspires other Chinese drivers."
