Russia's Veronika Kudermetova progressed to the second round of the WTA 1000 Miami Open on Wednesday with a 6-2, 7-6 (5) victory over China's Wang Xinyu.

World No. 52 Kudermetova served seven aces and won 79 percent of her first serve points to take the match in an hour and 31 minutes.

Wang, who is ranked 39th, saved six of eight break points but was let down by a series of unforced errors against the former world No. 9.

Kudermetova will meet compatriot Mirra Andreeva in her next match after the 17-year-old had a first-round bye.

Meanwhile, Tseng Chun-Hsin from Chinese Taipei advanced to the second round of the men's competition with a 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory over Italian Mattia Bellucci.

Tseng won 82 percent of points on his first serve and converted two of four break points to prevail in an hour and 32 minutes in the ATP Masters 1000 event.
