Granit Xhaka has captivated audiences over the past months, drawing "oohs" and "ahhs" wherever he plays.
After leading Bayer Leverkusen to the 2024 national title and a German Cup win, the 32-year-old former Arsenal midfielder continues to reach new heights despite his age.
"I am getting older," the 133-capped Swiss international said, "but this doesn't seem to affect my performance."
His current form is well-timed as Leverkusen prepares for a UEFA Champions League last-16 clash against German record champion Bayern Munich.
With a passing accuracy of 91%, an average of over 10 kilometers covered per game, and consistent deep runs, Xhaka has established himself as the beating heart of his team.
Not only Bayern coach Vincent Kompany but also TV pundits like former Bayern captain Stefan Effenberg are trying to figure out how to stop a player who seems unstoppable.
"I am fit, maybe in better shape than last season," Xhaka said. "We are robust and stable enough to annoy Bayern."
For Effenberg, neutralizing the Swiss international is key to the matchup. "If you can stop him, your chances rise. If not, you get in trouble," he said.
The former German international suggested assigning a "shadow-like bodyguard" to track Xhaka's movements and close down space.
Xhaka credits Spanish coach Xabi Alonso for the team's strong mental state. "We score the 2-0 and he comes onto the pitch, telling us to keep on pushing by shouting: go on, go on."
He noted that Alonso's determination aligns perfectly with his own ambitions, adding that he closely observes former German international and Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos.
Xhaka explained that he has adopted Kroos' technique of using peripheral vision to deceive opponents by pointing in one direction while passing in another.
"I am a great fan of Toni. And of course, you look at the great players and how they do things," he said of the five-time Champions League winner.
In Leverkusen's recent 4-1 win over 2022 Euro League winner Frankfurt, Xhaka's exceptional passing led to goals and showcased his influence on the game.
"It's a fifty-fifty issue against Bayern," Xhaka said. "We are looking forward to this challenge, and we are ready."
