Real Madrid remains level on points with FC Barcelona at the top of La Liga after a 2-0 win at home to Girona on Sunday.

Luka Modric scored the opening goal in the 40th minute with a spectacular volley after he was given time to control a clearance from a corner on his chest.

Madrid was without Jude Bellingham, but with Brahim Diaz filling in, they still created a host of chances, although Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois had to be alert to deny Arnaut Danjuma.

Vinicius Jr. scored Real Madrid's second goal of the game in the closing minutes with a pass from Kylian Mbappe, who had been frustrated several times by Girona goalkeeper, Paulo Gazzaniga.

Alvaro Rubio's return as Real Valladolid head coach ended in a crushing 7-1 defeat away to Athletic Bilbao, which remains fourth.

In Sunday's final game, Arsen Zakharyan, Take Kubo and Jon Olasagasti all scored as Real Sociedad won 3-0 at home to Leganes.

On Satuday, second-half goals from substitutes Dani Olmo and Ferran Torres gave a slightly below par Barcelona a 2-0 win away to Las Palmas.

Barca had struggled to get into the game against an aggressive rival, but Olmo opened the scoring close to the hour after a pass from Lamine Yamal, and Ferran sealed a tense win in injury time, shortly after Las Palmas had had a penalty appeal rejected by the VAR.

Julian Alvarez scored twice in the first half as Atletico Madrid won 3-0 in Valencia, with Angel Correa making it 3-0 minutes from time as Antoine Griezmann also impressed with two assists.

Ayoze Perez's 66th-minute goal gave fifth-placed Villarreal a 1-0 away win to Rayo Vallecano, who played for 50 minutes with 10 men after Jorge de Frutos' red card.

Espanyol moved away from the bottom three while sinking Alaves deeper into trouble after Fernando Calero's 87th-minute header gave them a 1-0 win in Vitoria against a rival with one win from 13 games.

On Friday night, Iago Aspas' penalty saw Celta Vigo win 1-0 at home to Osasuna to give his side a chance to battle for a place in Europe next season.
