Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the French Open due to a right knee injury, tournament organizers announced on Tuesday.

"Due to a torn medial meniscus in his right knee [discovered during an MRI scan performed on Tuesday], Novak Djokovic, who was supposed to play Casper Ruud in the quarterfinals tomorrow, has been forced to withdraw from the Roland-Garros tournament," a statement from the organizers said.

The defending champion had survived two five-set thrillers in three days to reach the last eight, booking a clash against seventh-seed Ruud in the quarterfinals for a rematch of last year's final.

After his victory on Monday, the 37-year-old already revealed that there was a possibility that he would not be able to continue in the tournament.

"I guess we'll do some more screening and tests and checkups tomorrow as well. We have done some with doctor right now after the match. Some positive news but also some maybe concerns, so let's see tomorrow," the Serbian said on Monday.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion broke multiple records with his latest victory - the 370th win at Grand Slam tournament putting him clear of Roger Federer, and also breaking the record for most Grand Slam quarterfinal appearances, but his withdrawal halts his bid for a record-extending 25th major title.
