South Africa became the first host team in the World Cup history to miss the second round and South Korea joined Argentina in last 16 on Tuesday.

Bafana Bafana bowed out of Africa's first World Cup after beating a disorganized French side 2-1 in Group A, where Uruguay and Mexico finished 1-2 to advance.

South Korea edged into the knockout stage after a 2-2 draw with Nigeria in Group B, which was topped by Argentina who garnered nine points after nipping Greece 2-0.

Bongani Kuhumalo headed South Africa ahead in the 20th minute and to compound French woes, Yoan Gourcuff was sent off for an elbow foul against MacBeth Sibaya six minutes later.

South Africa doubled their lead in the 37th minute as Katlego Mphela tapped home in a goalmouth melee.

France showed their teeth in the later part of the second half, threatening the South African goal several times.

Their efforts bore fruit at the 70th minute as Bacary Sagna slid Franck Ribery in on the right of the area and he squared for Florent Malouda to roll into an empty net.

France, a mess in and off the pitch, had lost captain Patrice Evra and kicked out indocile Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka.

Uruguay qualified from Group A with seven points and Mexico, the 1-0 losers to the group leaders, made it to the last 16, too.

Uruguay's winner came on the stroke of halftime as Diego Forlan snatched the ball on the halfway line and sent it to Edinson Cavani on the right, whose cross was headed home by Luis Suarez.

Uruguay will take on South Korea for a quarter-final berth.

South Korea didn't start well in Durban as Nigeria took an early lead through Kaly Uche.

But South Korea made it even through Lee Jung-Soo who scrambled past Vincent Enyeama from Ki Sung-Yeung's set-piece.

Park Chu-Young's spinning free kick put South Korea in lead four minutes after the restart but Ayegbeni Yakubu leveled the scores when he converted a penalty after Kim Nam-Il brought down Obasi Ogbuke in the area.

The draw put South Korea in second place after Argentina who won their third straight game.

Argentina's goals came at the end game when Martin Demichelis smashed the ball into the roof of the Greek net with 13 minutes left.

At the 89th minute, Lionel Messi's strike was palmed into the path of Martin Palermo, who slotted home with his right foot.
