Swimming's world governing body FINA Friday decided swimsuits have to be made from textiles and set a limit of the amount of the swimsuit coverage during the world championships.
High-tech bodysuits have helped swimmers to smash world records so easily that 108 new world records were born a year from now.
In a bid to regulate the advance in swimsuit technology, FINA banned some polyurethane swimsuits that may artificially raise the speed.
"The material is to be textile," FINA executive director Cornel Marculescu told a news conference.
The details of the new rules will be released after another meeting on July 28 when the exact measurements for men's and women's outfits for 2010 will be ratified.
Full bodysuits will remain for these championships, whose swimming events begin on Sunday.
