Yunnan golden monkeys (rhinopithecus roxellanae) are seen at the Baima Snow Mountain State Nature Reserve in Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, southwest China's Yunnan Province, Feb. 8, 2009. The number of Yunnan golden monkeys has risen from more than 500 in 1983 to around 1,300 at present at the nature reserve thanks to the protection efforts of local government and residents. There are some 2,000 Yunnan golden monkeys altogether in China. Yunnan golden monkeys, of which only China boasts, are a kind of animals listed in Category I of the Chinese Wildlife Protection Act and one of the most endangered animals in Appendix 1 of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), and on the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).
