Spanish archers look to end Paralympic losing streak
Adjust font size:

Despite Spain's chances of winning an archery medal appearing bleak at the Beijing Paralympic Games, team leader Fernando Julian is confident of a good performance.

Four Spanish archers will take to Beijing's Olympic Green Archery Field on Tuesday, for the ranking round.

"I'm satisfied with the training. They spent days adapting to the venue and watching other archers. It's very good," Fernando Julian said.

"Manuel Candela hopes to enter the first eight in tomorrow's Ranking Round. What place we can get tomorrow is not as important."

"There is not much difference between No. 1 and No. 8 in the Ranking Round. It's is more important for the archers to get the feel of shooting well and help them build confidence," he added.

Spain's last Paralympic archery medal was in the Barcelona Games in 1992 when the men's team won a silver medal.

"Archery is not the most popular sport for disabled people in Spain. There are about 30 or 35 Men and Women disabled archers in the country. Wheelchair Basketball is the most popular sport," said Julian. "This time, we expect a Men's Team medal," he added.
