Thoughts on Thanksgiving Day

Thanksgiving is also an important reminder to take time more often to express our thanks and praise to others. One of my favorite quotes is from poet John Masefield who wrote: "Once in a century a man may be ruined or made insufferable by praise. But surely once in a minute something generous dies for want of it." At home, in the workplace, in our interactions with others, we should praise more - criticize less. Rather than rush off or take things and people for granted, we should take time to praise and not worry that we will spoil the other person and feed their already over-sized ego.
The "something generous" part of the quote reflects the fact that praise brings out the best in people. They feel relaxed and unfrightened. They smile. They are more prepared to try and focus on success and meeting positive expectations rather than be paralyzed by fear and closed to new ideas, new ways, and new opportunities.
Thankfulness should also be expressed in our actions. Giving service to others, especially those less fortunate than ourselves is also very good for us. Indeed, when one is feeling sad and unhappy, one of the best ways out of it is to focus less on ourselves and think of and help others.
Finally, thankfulness can be expressed by not forgetting to move, sing, and dance. "Joy" should not be a "noun" but is best as a verb, an action word. So, on this Thanksgiving Day, "rejoice" and be thankful for all the many blessings in your life and take the time to express that thanks in your thoughts, words and deeds to all the people in your life and in your interactions with all those whom you meet.
