No luxury weddings for cautious Chinese officials

The coming wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton has captured public attention in China. It's not the first time the Chinese public has become obsessed with a royal wedding in another country. The previous example of Princess Diana and Prince Charles 30 years ago suggested that the public wedding of very important people could perfectly advertize the country's culture and wealth.

According to an online survey, Chinese netizens are mostly interested in the extravagance of the royal wedding. The tourism bonus from the wedding is estimated to be worth 750 million pounds ($1.24 billion). It is expected that enthusiastic Chinese tourists would contribute a substantial sum.

I am curious as to what Chinese officials think about the British royal family's lavishness.

Zhou Jiugeng, the former director of Jiangning district's property bureau in Nanjing, fired as a result of the distribution of an image of his wearing a luxury watch worth over $11,500, would certainly feel things were unfair. In contrast to Prince William's open luxuries, his moderate obsession with luxury goods sent him to prison.
