Pakistan army continues operation despite retaliatory bombings
Adjust font size:

Pakistan's security forces on Friday continued their military operation against militants in the northwest, a day after twin bomb blasts outside Pakistan's main military arms factory killed at least 70.

The shelling targeting Taliban's hideouts continues in different parts of Swat valley of North West Frontier Province ( NWFP), but there are no reports of casualties, private Geo TV channel reported.

Pakistani security forces launched the major offensive on July 29 after local Taliban kidnapped 25 policemen and paramilitary soldiers from a police station in Swat valley.

But Pakistan's Taliban retaliated with suicide attacks near two gates of the Pakistan Ordnance Factory in Wah Cantt in eastern Pakistan's Punjab province, killing at least 70 and injuring dozens.

A spokesman for Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan said that "it was in reaction to military action in Swat and Bajaur."

There is no sign of the Pakistan army stopping its military action in the northwest.

The Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani visited Swat on Thursday, and "he appreciated high morale of the troops," according to a military statement.
