China opposes Turkey's call for UN talks on Xinjiang
Adjust font size:

China on Thursday dismissed Turkey's proposal of discussing Xinjiang's riots in the United Nations Security Council, saying the incident was a domestic issue.

"The Chinese government has taken decisive measures according to the law. This is purely China's internal affair and doesn't demand a UN Security Council discussion," Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang told the regular briefing.

Qin's comments came after Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday said Turkey would ask the UN body to discuss ways of ending the violence in northwest China's Xinjiang region.

Sunday's riots in Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, left at least 156 people dead and more than 1,000 injured.

Qin said the July 5 incident in Xinjiang was organized and premeditated violence aimed at sabotaging China's national unification and ethnic solidarity.

The spokesman called for the international community to have a clear understanding of what really happened, understand and support the Chinese government's efforts to safeguard national unification, territorial integrity, ethnic unity and social stability.
