Men packing on extra pounds
Adjust font size:

More men in Shanghai are overweight than women, with those holding managerial jobs packing on the most extra pounds, according to a survey released on Sunday.

A survey of 23,326 adults in seven industries in the city has found a higher ratio of obesity among males than females due to poor diets and a lack of exercise, the Labor Daily reported.

The report didn't give any specific figures.

The survey said male senior managers are the fattest and tallest group, according to Lu Liping, deputy dean of the major of sports and recreation at Shanghai University of Sports, said, who conducted the survey.

Technicians among the surveyed were found to be in the best physical condition, while farmers suffered the worst health, the survey said.

Male college students in Shanghai were found to have more obesity problems than their female classmates, according to a 2006 Donghua University study of 52,032 students in eight local universities.

City sport authorities and educators have urged students to get more exercise.
