The State Environmental Protection Administration and National Statistics Bureau published China’s first Green GDP (gross domestic product) Accounting Report in September 2006. Starting in March 2004, the research group collected and analyzed data related to pollution caused by 42 industries, projected controlling costs, and environmental degradation costs across the country. According to the report, nationwide environmental pollution caused 511.8 billion yuan of economic losses (US$61.8 billion) in 2004, or 3.05 percent of total GDP.
