China's top legislator Wu Bangguo has urged the Beijing municipal government to make good preparations for the upcoming Olympic Games to ensure it will be unique and successful.

Wu, chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, made the remarks during a two-day inspection tour of Beijing that wrapped up on Wednesday.

During his trip, he visited major Olympic venues such as the National Stadium and the National Aquatics Center. He also met some of the facilities' designers and builders, as well as some athletes.

He also got a first-hand look at some new transportation facilities, including the No. 3 terminal at the Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA) and the No. 5 subway line that connects south and north Beijing.

Wu, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, spoke highly of Beijing's preparations for the Olympic Games.

The preparations made for the Games in the areas of infrastructure development, organization and services had laid a "solid foundation" for hosting of the 2008 Olympic Games and Paralympics, he said.

He urged Beijing authorities to ensure the timely completion of the construction of all facilities for the Games. Contests should be organized to test the facilities and allow the organizers building up their experiences, he said.

Beijing should continue to improve its environmental protection and infrastructure, try harder to control air and water pollution, curb vehicle emissions and give priority to the development of the public transportation system, he said.

Wu also asked Beijing to improve its rural and urban planning capacity and strike a better balance between construction and the protect preservation of cultural heritage.
